About VOC
Volatile Organic Compounds, referred to as "VOC" is the major reason affecting in-car air quality. VOC including alkanes, alkenes, aromatics, aldehydes or ketones and other substances, has a special pungent smell, and some have been classified as carcinogens, such as vinyl chloride, benzene, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, some of VOC can damage the ozone layer, such as chlorofluorocarbons and hydrochlorofluorocarbons.
Because VOC in vehicle mostly come from the paint after coating, our country has been vigorously developing environmentally friendly paint products in recent years, in order to reduce the harm to human health about the VOC in materials. On January 26, 2015, our country started to levy excise tax about paint products, when were in production, processing and import, except that VOC content in paint is not more than 420 g/L during construction. If the VOC concentration is too high, it easily leads to acute poisoning, which headache, dizziness, cough, nausea, vomiting are appeared with mild symptoms appear and tic is appeared with severe symptoms, as well as have a harm to liver, kidney, brain and nervous system.
The foreign medical studies have shown that pregnant women living in the VOC environment have a higher probability of fetal malformation than normal, and there may affect future intellectual development of children.

VOC regulations in China
Ministry of Environmental Protection leaded to established the Standard “HJ/T 400-2007 Determination of volatile organic compounds and carbonyl compounds in cabin of vehicles”, which was implemented in March 1, 2008; in 2011, Ministry of Environmental Protection and the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine of the People’s Republic of China jointly issued “Standard GB/T 27630-2011 Guideline for air quality assessment of passenger car”
Standard GB/T 27630-2011 is a standard about in-car air quality which was issued by China, which fills a gap in-car air quality for a long time without standards in China, and makes in-car air quality in China's market have laws to follow. The standard is mainly applicable to new production vehicles which will be sold, and the vehicles in use.
“Guideline for air quality assessment of passenger car” sets up the concentration requirements of benzene, toluene, xylene, ethylbenzene, styrene, formaldehyde, acetaldehyde and acrolein in-car air, and are compared with the limits of WHO and JAMA, which are shown in tale 1.
